Linzi Upton is 'the Quilt Quine', (Quine is from an old Scots word for 'girl, woman or wifie).

The Quilt Quine ethos is that quilting is the freedom to express your creativity using whatever ideas or materials take your fancy. Linzi believes:

There are no hard and fast rules in quilting. Any ‘rules’ can be bent or broken.

Quilting projects might be useful, practical or for exhibitions, but they should always be enjoyable or fun, and interesting to work on. Machine Quilting gives you the confidence to develop your own inspiration, such as the colours and texture of your local landscape, rather than following another person’s pattern. You can make something completely ‘off the wall’ or just a small book cover, using modern patchwork and quilting, on a domestic or long-arm machine.

Linzi’s idiosyncratic mix of techniques and practical projects for machine quilting – alongside her video demonstrations – will inspire you to try out a fusion of skills and ideas, and then create more original quilts. She leads the beginner to machine quilting gently through tips and techniques, then shows how to apply those new skills on fabulous projects, including working with metallic fabrics, spandex, leather, beads and embellishments.

As Linzi says: ‘I used to aspire to traditional quilt designs which I found difficult to replicate, but now I enjoy working on my unique style which is as individual as my handwriting. Crucially, I am always prepared to deviate from whatever the original plan might have been – if there even was a plan in the first place’.

See Linzi’s video introduction to Machine Quilting on Vivebooks’ YouTube channel, along with other videos linked to this ebook showing techniques such as drawing circles on the domestic sewing machine, and how to bind a quilt.

International acclaim for Machine Quilting

  • Linzi Upton wrote a fascinating book, published by Vivebooks. I always liked unconventional approaches to patchwork and Linzi perfectly demonstrates them. Search for something different, trial and error – a great way to patchwork, but the fact that a mistake – this is not a bug, it’s interesting, something new.
Fantasy Linzi is amazing: she finds unusual objects and materials to create them, which can amaze any imagination. Excellent photos allow you to see fabulous process and inimitable result.
Thank you, Linzi!’ – Natalia Turchaninova, Quilter (master patchworker) from Russia.
  • 'What a brilliant ebook! Linzi is so talented and that patchwork car just makes you want to meet her – and you can in her ebook, ‘Machine Quilting’. It is packed full of really inspirational ideas which are just crying out to be tried. With Linzi’s fun approach, you’ll find yourself experimenting with all sorts of new techniques and quilting up a storm! There are no Quilt Police here, so just go for it! – Chris Porter

Linzi Upton - The Quilt Quine

Linzi Upton is an award winning quilter, mostly self taught, and well-known for large idiosyncratic 3D textile installations such as her Quilted Yurt, full-sized Smart car cover, and The Quilted Coracle. A second yurt is curated by The Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts in Cedarburg USA. The coracle won the 3D Creations category at Festival of Quilts 2013.

Linzi’s quilt Odin’s Trilogy was placed second at MQX West in 2013 and she won an award for Merit Machine Quilting at the prestigious IQA Houston show in 2012.

In 2016 Linzi Upton became the Bernina UK longarm ambassador and made a prize-winning quilt, Tartan Tattoo which was successful in the UK, The Netherlands, and won the World Quilt Show’s Best in Country award.

Another Norse inspired quilt followed in 2017: Shield Maiden, made from linen and a woad-dyed shawl.

Beelzebub won the contemporary quilts category at FOQ then went on to be juried into MQX, AQS shows in Lancaster, Grand Rapids, Daytona Beach, Paducah and IQA Houston.

Linzi has travelled extensively both for teaching and for fun; to Russia, USA, Germany, France and India.

Ten years on from becoming The Quilt Quine, Linzi says: ‘I am still writing a weekly blog, have started filming daily vlogs of 30 seconds or less, still having too many ideas at once to ever make all of the projects that I consider. I love to teach,  write, design, meet other textile fanatics and travel as much as possible!’

Linzi Upton is married with 3 children and lives in the beautiful Scottish countryside with a collection of pets and occasionally rare-breed pigs. For more about Linzi, go to her website:
